The best part of Medical school was probably the close friendships I made and the inspiring doctors that I met. I went to Newcastle Medical School which had a range of extracurricular activities I could get involved with- so taking part in charity work, karate, cricket, badminton- allowed me to meet people from many different backgrounds and this all helped to keep my enthusiasm up for the actual study part of it! I think it is really important to be able to keep a balance with work and non-work-related things and this really helped me be able to relate with patients when I met them in hospital. Let me know if you have other questions 🙂
I really enjoyed dissection class and anatomy! It was really interesting to learn more about the human body, and I think that inspired me to be a surgeon. I also really enjoyed meeting patients as a medical student and learning about their lives. People open up to you in a way that is unlike any other as a medical student/doctor, and it is a huge privilege to be part of someone’s life in that way. It can be scary being ill as a patient in hospital – and as a medical student, it felt really nice being there for someone when they needed someone to talk to on the wards in the hospital. I really enjoyed this aspect of medical school too.
