Nina Rzechorzek answered on 14 Jun 2019:
Yes – it’s not something that I work on but I loved going to sea-life centres as a kid and my brother and I used spend a lot of time on holidays exploring with snorkels and flippers – there’s so much to discover under water! I also have fond memories of a brilliant school biology field trip to the Pembrokeshire coast where we studied snails.
Most organisms anticipate daily environmental variations and orchestrate cellular functions using a circadian clock which entrains to the day/night cycle. Marine organisms are also subjected to fluctuations in light spectral composition as their depth varies, due to differential absorption of different wavelengths by sea water. Ostreococcus tauri is a unicellular species of marine green alga about 0.8 micrometres (μm) in diameter, the smallest free-living (non-symbiotic) eukaryote yet described. It has become a widely used model organism in circadian biology partly because of its simple genome. So if I was going to study any marine organism it would probably be Ostreococcus!

I love marine biology. I debated doing this when I was at school, probably driven by my dad’s interests as he was a marine biologist. I didn’t end up going into it but that means I can appreciate aquariums much more!

I would love to know more about marine biology, but sadly, haven’t had time to explore this subject other than watch BBC documentaries with David Attenborough!

Interested- yes, have knowledge about- no! Sorry I can’t help, only work with patients.

Kate Timms answered on 17 Jun 2019:
I don’t work on it, but yes! I love it. I really wish that I could breath underwater so that I could explore the ocean a bit more. I love snorkelling and I’ve even (somewhat unintentionally!) swam with sharks before.

I’ve never really learnt about marine biology! All my university education was very human human human. 🙂

My father-in-law has a boat and we spend a lot of the summer sailing the West coast of Scotland. I love the marine environment and spend some of my time on the boat spotting birds and other wildlife.

I find marine biology fascinating as a general subject. It’s something which I have always thought would be such an awesome job too!!
