Lab coats have a habit of hanging around in the lab a lot and getting really dirty – usually because they don’t get cleaned often enough! When working with stem cells in the lab, I prefer to use cleaner clothing to avoid contaminating my cells (but actually we use ‘fume hoods’, aseptic technique, and plenty of 70% ethanol spray which are the best measures we have for preventing contamination of cultures). I do sometimes wear a lab coat and they do have some plus points (like protecting you from chemicals that might harm your skin when working at the bench). The main issue I have with them is that they only portray one ‘image’ of what a scientist looks like, and that’s really not reflective of how diverse science and scientists are.
